GM part number 12639701 is a glow plug for 2006-2016 Chevrolet and GMC trucks with a 6.6L LBZ, LMM, LML, or LGH Duramax diesel engine.

Diesel engines depend on high heat in the combustion chamber to ignite diesel fuel.  When a diesel engine is started cold, additional heat is helpful to get it going.  One glow plug is used in each cylinder and preheats the air in the cylinder on cold starts.  When a glow plug is not working properly, you will notice rough running and excessive smoke until the engine temperature rises enough to not need glow plug assistance.
