1st Gen Dodge Cummins 5.9L and the Bosch VE Diesel Injection Pump
In 1989 the Cummins 5.9L diesel engine was added to the Dodge truck lineup and started a whole new frontier for the diesel pickup market. These trucks are commonly referred to as the first generation, or 1st gen Dodge trucks. The Cummins engine was rated at 160 HP and 400 foot pounds of torque. These trucks were built to work and did not have all the luxuries of today’s vehicles.
1989-1993 Dodge trucks with the 5.9 Cummins engines used the Bosch VE diesel fuel injection pump. The VE pump is a distributor style pump that was popular at the time since the 1970’s. The VE injection pump had a maximum output of close to 200 HP in the six cylinder version. The VE pump uses a single high pressure piston to deliver the fuel shot to the injectors much like a distributor delivers the spark to the spark plugs in a gas engine. Rollers move on a cam that pushes them together sending the fuel out the proper port to the injectors. Due to demand for higher horsepower and new emission regulations the VE injection pump was replaced in 1994 by the Bosch P7100 inline style injection pump.

1988-1993 Dodge Cummins VE Pump Fuel Pin & Governor Spring Upgrade
The VE pump Fuel Pin & Governor Spring from BD helps your 1988-1993 Cummins 5.9L Dodge truck make more power. An estimated increase of 30-40hp and 90-100 ft. lbs. of torque, is possible with minimal tools and approximately 2-3 hours of your time. You will feel the difference every time you drive! BD makes these VE fuel pins from high quality Chromalloy steel and are machined with a duel process that are first rough milled with a precision radius angle cut, heat treated to the 52 Rockwell hardness scale, then a final precision ground radius cut. The kit also includes a 3200 rpm governor spring to extend the engine RPM band by 700 rpm.

Looks easy right? No so much on the truck under the hood. It certainly can be done, but be awfully careful not to get dirt into the injection pump. Dirt will damage the intricate internal parts of the pump. If your pump is not nice and new like the one in the video, we recommend having these upgrades done at Huckstorf Diesel!
